Who is Listening?

But truly God has listened; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.
                              Psalm 66:19

Prayer is so much more than what we see or do.  It is an engagement of our spirit with the Spirit of God.  Only in actually knowing God, deeply and intimately, can we demonstrate our confident trust through prayer.

The Bible is very clear that when we go to God in prayer that we must do so with an absolute and unwavering faith that not only will God hear us but that He will listen and respond to us.

The communion of your heart through your spirit with the Holy Spirit is perhaps your greatest act of faith.  It is a place beyond words, time, space, or matter.  It is reckless in it's boldness and at the same time gentle in it's indestructible strength.  The power of God's presence is revealed first to the heart that seeks Him in prayer.  Only then can it be made manifest in the words and actions of the believer.

We cannot live out the life of abundance Jesus promised us without first seeking the presence of God in prayer.

Growing up I thought prayer was reciting memorized words from the hymnal.  I did not grow up in a Christian home so I really had no point of reference.  We were occasional Catholics that seldom crossed the threshold of our local church except for the obligatory visits at Christmas and Easter.

We did not talk of God nor did we pray.  There were no blessings over any meal except for Thanksgiving day and even that was a hit or miss event (the meal and the prayer).  There was no heart and no passion for God in our house.

My first experience with prayer occurred when I was 16 years old.  I was broken, depressed and hopeless.  God met me in my bedroom and told me that the answer to all my problems could be found in the Bible.  I won't go into the details here but I remember that night like it was yesterday.  This memory with it's touch and presence of God has stayed with me for over 30 years and it set the course of my life full sail toward God.

God wants you just as you are.  Bring everything you care about to Him.  Bring your questions.  Bring your doubts.  As you search your heart let God have your fears, the grudges you hold, the hurts as well as your dreams, your desires, and your heart.  Hold nothing back from God and He will hold nothing back from you.

There is no need to pretend with God.  You cannot hide anything from Him.  He knows it all but He is waiting for you to demonstrate your faith in Him by sharing the secrets you carry within.  You honor God when you are open and transparent with Him.  You honor God most when you humble yourself and hold nothing back.  God already loves you greatly and He wants you to be honest with Him.

In being honest with God, we are being honest with ourselves.

God Bless, Heidi
