The Pursuit of Life

We are all chasing after something.  We have a dream or desire that resides in our heart.  We may or may not share it with anyone but we all have that one thing that we desire more than anything else.

What are you pursuing?

Who are you pursuing?

And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
                              Luke 11:9, 10 ESV

If you are serious about wanting God show up big in your life, you will have to pursue Him.  Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  To love like that will require effort and diligence.  You will have to look for Him.  Ask Him questions and search (and wait) for His answers.

Blessings from Heaven don't just land in your lap without any effort on your part.  In today's verse, Jesus tells us to ask our Heavenly Father for things, to seek His wisdom, and to knock on His kingdom's gate.

The Bible tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.  We have to chase after God if we want Him help us with anything.  He has already done His part, the rest is up to us.   James says that our faith is dead unless it can be seen in our actions (James 2:17).

Does your life reflect Jesus Christ?

We are called, as children of God, to follow after and imitate Jesus.  This means we have to let go of our self-centered desires and surrender to the One who gave His life so we could come to and live with God.  That One is Jesus.

Making Jesus the Lord of our lives is more than saying a prayer.  It is a way of life.  In asking Jesus to live in us, we are to give Him total control of our lives.  This is the beginning of our personal pursuit of life.

Jesus died so we could live.  He lived so we could be victorious over the devil.  He showed us how by the way He lived.  Jesus spent much time in prayer.  He accepted people where they were (broken and messy) then He challenged them to live a new life.

In John 15, Jesus uses a plant as an example of how we are to live this new life He has given us.

I am the vine; you are the branches.  Whoever abides in me and I in him, bears much (abundant) fruit.  However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
                              John 15:5 Amplified

I love the Amplified version of this verse because it reminds me that my life is dependent on my connection to Christ.  Your life does too!

Plants have a circulatory system in them like we do.  The leaves and fruit (or flower) cannot grow or develop unless the branch is connected to the stalk.  Think about a stem that is cut away from the root of the plant - it dies.  The same can be said for us.

I tried for many years to live life on my own terms and to work things out by myself.  I tried to hide from my hurts and bury my brokenness behind a facade of happiness and self-reliance.  Through a series of events that left me depressed, miserable and hopeless, God reached out to me.  He offered me real life, abundant life if I would believe in and follow Jesus Christ.

My choice to follow Christ came with the responsibility to learn a new way of living.  A Way I had never lived before.  The Holy Spirit was my Teacher and the Bible was my text book.  I read and studied it.  I asked questions, searched for answers, and knocked on His gates.  And God was faithful.   He responded to me every time with love, patience, and acceptance.

Today is your turn.  Do you want the life Jesus came to earth for you to have?

Are you willing to accept the responsibility to ask for it, search for it, and knock at His door?

Your greatest life imaginable is on the line.  If your serious and you really want what God has prepared for you, then now is the time for you to surrender everything to Jesus Christ.  Let Him lead you each day.  Rely on His strength.  Use His wisdom.

Live connected to the Vine and your life will be full of fruit!
