Prayer is Planting

Spiritual Disciplines - Prayer

Last Monday, I started a forty day prayer challenge.  Since then, God has been impressing upon me the topic of planting.  I am not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination but I love well manicured English country gardens. I love beautiful aromatic flowers and fresh picked herbs and veggies.  I love being outdoors and can spend hours sitting by the lake, on a park bench, at the beach, or on some rocks.  I feel closest to God when I am outside.  But as I thought about planting during this prayer challenge, I realized that praying is how we plant our destiny.

In prayer we plant the seeds of our dreams.  Our future is determined by what we pray about today.

Your destiny is determined by your prayers.

Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing, To declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
  Psalms 92:13-15 NKJV

Being planted in the house of God involves more than just what you do at church.  Being planted in the house of the Lord means you live a life that is connected to God.  It is daily interaction through prayer with Him that keeps the windows of heaven open over your life.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.
  I Corinthians 3:6-9 NKJV

Prayer plants seeds of faith in our heart.  These seeds develop strong healthy vibrant lives when pressure is applied and the hard ouster shell is cracked.  Any gardener will tell you that in order for seeds to grow roots and produce fruit they must endure pressure from the soil around them.  The force of the soil against the outer shell of the seed causes it to crack.  These small openings expose the inner pieces of the seed to the nutrients of the soil and allows for root development to occur.  The roots have to be secure before the actual plant can be seen above the soil.

Our seeds of faith work the same way.  We not only plant the seeds in prayer but we also nourish them.  This means we don't pray once and then stand around waiting for God to wave His magic wand and give us what we want. While some seeds will produce a quick harvest, there will be other seeds of faith that we must continue to pray.

Persisting in prayer is the fertilizer for our faith.

As we meet with God, His Holy Spirit will guide us in the steps we should take.  He prepares us for what is ahead and He empowers us to withstand the storms that are bound to come.  Galatians 6:9 promises us that we will reap a great harvest IF we don't quit.  This means, we keep praying even when it seems as if God is not listening.  We keep praying and believing even when we cannot see any way for the promise to come to life.  The things that seem impossible to us are no problem for God.

Prayer is how you plant the promises of God in your life.
