Who are you?
My conversations with people this week have all centered on the topic of who we really are. I am amazed at how people describe themselves. We live in a body and we have a mind but who we really are is the part of us that connects with God. People tend to look at themselves through the eyes of their past, what they've done and what they have. With this in mind, I turned to 1 John 4:6-21 in the Amplified Bible. The very first sentence says, "We are children of God." This means we are related to and have the same genetic makeup as Jesus.
The simplicity of Jesus Christ is the heart knowledge of who we really are in Him, through Him, and with Him. Heart knowledge is a revelation in your heart that changes the way you look at and respond to everything and everyone around you. I used to see myself through my mistakes and failures and the things other people said about me. I was always looking back at how I was inadequate and weak and wrong. This distorted view of myself made it difficult for me to be a vessel of God's love. Through mediation on these verses in 1 John, I gained the heart knowledge of who I really am. As I really accepted and believed what the Word says about me, I began to change. As I continue to press into God and believe His Word over my own, I discovered a deeper intimacy with Him and a deeper understanding of His love in me.
A key part of this process was learning what it really means to be humble. You see, you can talk and teach about love all you want but until it makes a connection in your heart with humility it has no impact. Being humble is a complete lack of trust in your own abilities and a total dependence on the true source of love, God. A humble person has no problems letting God be in control because they understand the authority they live under. True humility is manifested in the life of Christ and reflected in our genuine love and concern for others. The qualities of love cannot be separated from a humble spirit. Look for yourself at the way love is described in 1 Cor. 13:4-8 and see if any of them can be done without humility. Total dependence on God is necessary for us to live in humility and being humble is necessary for being a vessel of God's love in this world.
You are a child of God. Don't let this world convince you otherwise. Stand on the eternal truth of God's Word and do not stray from it. Jeremiah 6:16 says, "Thus says the Lord: Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls..." I challenge you to take some time with this. Seek to understand not just who you are but God's love for you and how it moves through you to touch the lives of others.
All for the glory of God,
Heidi
