The Power of Silence
Be still and know that I am God...
Psalm 46:10 NKJ
It sounds so easy, simple even, but when life throws you a curve ball, this can be the most difficult thing to do. I mean, really, how do you clear your mind of the chaos around you and focus quietly on God? The only way I know is through practice.
There is so much power and love that fills those quiet times with God. These are your most intimate moments together, where He speaks of His great love for you and where He tenderly holds you. Words cannot adequately describe the pure bliss that comes from learning to just sit with God. No talking, no music, no TV, no telephone, just a space of time filled only with His glorious presence.
I recently had a huge disappointment. The amazing thing is that for two days before I got the news, I had an overwhelming need to be silent and still with God. I didn't turn on the TV or play music or go anywhere. I didn't even talk out loud to God. I just spent the time in silence enjoying Him, His beauty, and the power and encouragement of His Word. When the news came to me, I was devastated but I also had an inner peace because of the time God and I had just spend together. I truly believe that the time I spent in silence with God helped me stay in faith about the whole situation.
We humans brainstorm options and plans, but God's purpose prevails.
Prov. 19:21 The Message Bible
When stuff happens to us, we usually spend a considerable amount of time trying to figure out a solution. We look at all the options and make plans based on different scenarios. We twist the whole thing around trying to find answers from different angles. We decide what we are willing to accept in the situation and then we ask God to give it to us. As this verse points out, it is futile to waste our time and energy doing these things because God's plan for us will prevail.
Sitting silently with God is something you can learn to do. Start with just a couple of minutes and increase the time as God leads you (set a timer if you need to). I will warn you that as you learn to do this, you will develop a hunger for more of God. It is better to practice (a lot) before trials come but if you are in the midst of a storm, know that God will still meet you in the silence.
In times of heartbreak and struggle, our greatest comfort and strength will come from spending quality time with God. When we turn to Him in silent trust, we open ourselves up to receive His wisdom and perspective about whatever we may be facing. We know that without God we can do nothing. So, just sit with Him. Focus on Him. Know that He is always with you and He loves you greatly. Watch the times of silence with God give you encouragement, peace, and wisdom.
Our ability to walk through storms with peace comes from learning to sit with God in silence.
