Rules vs Discipline

Yesterday we talked about the ineffectiveness of rule keeping.  Only by faith will we please God but a life of faith requires discipline.  With that said, there is a difference between rule-keeping and discipline.

We discipline ourselves to reach a goal and Jesus is that goal.  Romans 12:1-2 talks about our transformation through the word of God.  It comes not because we follow rules but because we put God first in our lives and refuse to let our own desires be above what God desires.

When we discipline ourselves we are choosing to live (or train) not according to how we feel but according to what we value and believe.

Discipline engages our heart and mind in the pursuit of one common goal.  It overrides our emotions and chooses to live by what we believe in our hearts and know in our minds.

A disciplined life is submitted to God.

A rule keeping life is submitted to self.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 9, Paul talks about athletes who train hard to win a prize.  We, too, are in training - learning to live a godly life in an ungodly world.  Through discipline we train ourselves to demonstrate the love and compassion of Christ not only to others but to ourselves as well.

Discipline yourself - submit to God and live God first.
