Turn Away
I'm still thinking about "turning away from evil" in Psalm 34:14 from yesterday.
Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from
before my eyes.
Cease to do evil.
Isa. 1:16 NKJ
Repent of your sins. What this means is to acknowledge what you have done that is wrong or sinful and asking God to forgive you. Through repentance, we are made clean in the eyes of God.
The Bible is very clear that all who are truly sorry (grieved in their heart) will be forgiven and it is at this point most people stop. They apologize for their sin and ask for mercy but they don't go any farther and continue to repeat the same sin.
Once you say your sorry the next step is to stop doing what offends God. The best way to do this is by choosing to do good instead.
This sounds easy to write it but change is rarely that easy. Your mind will fight you. It is comfortable with the way things are and will resist all efforts to break old habits. The following list are just a few of the excuses that may cross your mind:
"It's too hard."
"I've tried before and I couldn't do it."
"I can't give _______ up."
"What about me?"
All these thoughts are surface level distractions trying to stop you from giving up old unproductive ways in exchange for new productive ways. I challenge you to dig deeper. Go below these excuses and look into your heart. There you will find the love of Christ that lives in you.
Through His love, you will have the wisdom, strength, and ability to successfully give up your old habits and behaviors that do not line up with God's way of living. Here is a list of Bible based promises from God that will help you through the process of change (and during times of struggle):
God's grace is sufficient to help you with anything.
God is strong enough to make you strong.
With God, all things are possible.
You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
Do not expect an overnight transformation and don't expect perfection from yourself either. God knows your weaknesses and what you struggle with. He knows you cannot do it by yourself that is why He sent Jesus and gave us the Holy Spirit.
Repentance is not about condemnation. It helps you live closer to God because it helps you comprehend how much you really need Him. The closer you come to God, the more you will resemble Him.
Repentance builds intimacy between you and God.
