I AM the Bread of Life
God is so big and so great that there is not just one word that can describe who He is in His entirety. Jesus reveals to us through His seven "I AM" statements not only who God is but what He has given us.
I am the Bread of Life [that gives life -- the Living Bread].
John 6:48 Amplified
Jesus makes this statement three times (John 6: 35, 48, 51). He is the Living Bread that gives us life. He is nourishment to our mind and spirit in the same way that food nourishes our body. When Jesus says to eat of His body, this is not a physical meal that we can consume and it is gone but rather it is a spiritual encounter that continually satiates our hunger and thirst for something more than the world has to offer.
Jesus satisfies the inner longings of our heart that possessions and people cannot reach.
Partaking of this spiritual banquet is open to who so ever will believe in Jesus. He wants and encourages us all to come to Him with the promise that He will reject no one (John 6:37). To eat this meal one must only believe that Jesus is Who He says He is and that He has done what He says He has done and that He can do all that He promises to do.
As a "doer" this has been a hard meal for me to eat. I used to wonder "how can I do this?" I was looking at what I could do instead of accepting what Jesus had already done. Jesus only asks one thing, that we simply - believe. That's it. There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation or be made right with God. Jesus has done everything that needs to be done.
Having said that, there are several things we can do that demonstrate our belief and trust in Jesus. One is spending time with Him and asking for His help in our daily lives. Another is reading our Bibles. Jesus is the Word made flesh so when we get familiar with and learn what is in our Bibles then we are really learning who Jesus is and what His life, death, and resurrection have made possible for us. A third way is through Communion. By partaking of the Eucharistic symbols of bread and wine, we reaffirm our reliance and dependence on the mercy and grace of God.
The Bible says we are to know Jesus in spirit and in truth. Our faith in Him cannot be based on head knowledge only. Jesus wants us to know Him intimately, deeply, and personally. He is alive in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. In knowing Him, we discover who we are.
Daily Jesus feeds us through His Word and His presence. He is the giver of Life. Taking what He provides keeps us healthy and whole and causes us to grow. Living connected to His constant supply is the source of true life.
Feed on Jesus, the Living Bread that gives us life.
