I AM the Door of the Sheep

The Bible often refers to the followers of God as sheep.  In the third "I AM" pronouncement of Christ, we begin to see the benefits of being in the sheepfold.

So Jesus said again, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, the I Myself am the Door for the sheep.
                              John 10:7 Amplified

To really understand what this statement means, we have to look at this verse in it's context.  John Chapter 9 ended with Jesus teaching about the Pharisees being spiritually blind.  Their inability to recognize Him as the Son of God is sin and leaves them weak and defenseless.  Chapter 10 begins with the analogy of the sheepfold having only one entrance.  Jesus points out that just because one is within the fold, it doesn't mean they are really sheep.

False teachers and prophets have been around since before Jesus came to the earth and there are still many today.  Jesus cautions us to not be fooled by people who lead us away from Him instead of helping us move closer to Him.

There is only One door into the family of God  and that is Jesus Christ.

When we know Jesus personally, we are able to recognize His voice.  Our personal knowledge of Him accepts His love and strengthens our trust in Him and therefore leads us to follow Him.

The Pharisees had many laws and rules for people to live by in order to be pleasing to God.  In contrast, Jesus gave us only two - love God and love people.  He set us free to live our daily lives apart from the law of religion and within the expansive love of God.

I am the Door; anyone who enters in through Me will be saved (will live).  He will come in and he will go out [freely], and will find pasture.
                              John 10:9 Amplified

Do not mistake this verse to mean you can vacillate between being in Christ one moment and out the next.  You either believe Jesus is the Son of God or you don't.  It is only our belief in Him that places us within the fold.

Being part of God's flock means we rely on Jesus to help us live each day.  We have the freedom to make decisions and choices for ourselves and to pursue our dreams as we live in response to God's great love for us.

Wisdom also comes with this freedom.  Every choice we make is now influenced by the understanding that while all things are open and possible for us to do, not all things are beneficial for us.

One final point on this statement is that our safety and security depends on us living under the covering of Christ's authority over our lives. By entering through the Door of Jesus Christ, we are protected from the wolves that try to devour the sheep.

Our belief in Jesus as the Son of God puts us in His flock and keeps us safe.
