I AM the Resurrection and the Life

In the eleventh chapter of the book of John we find Jesus talking to Martha after the death of Lazarus.

Jesus said to her, "I am [Myself] the Resurrection and the Life.  Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, and relies) on Me, although he may die, yet he shall live.
                              John 11:25 Amplified

This fifth 'I AM' pronouncement deals with our affections for the things of this world and the eternal life that Jesus has secured for us.

Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.  He took away the power death had to keep people apart from God when their lives in this world ended.  Now, anyone who believes in Jesus, will spend eternity with God.

Death is no longer the end of our lives.  Instead, it is a transition from the physical world we know into the spiritual world.

This is not something many people talk about, but there is more to our world than what we can experience through our senses.  There are actually unseen and often ignored spiritual forces that are propelled into action based on our words.

The Bible says the power of the tongue is life and death, meaning that what we say, whether good or evil, has the ability to change physical things.  We put angels to work with our prayers and give the devil openings into our lives when we gossip, criticize or are hateful to each other.

Jesus teaches us the importance of putting spiritual things first in John 12 when He explains that in striving to keep the things of our earthly life, we will lose it all to death.  But people who focus on their spiritual life through their faith in Him, will live forever.

In understanding this particular 'I AM' statement we realize how important it is to feed and nurture our spirits here and now because it is our spirit that will live with God for all eternity.

In the business of Christmas it is easy to forget that our treasure lies not in what we get and give each other but what Jesus has already given to us.
