Love not Sacrifice
For I desire and delight in dutiful steadfast love and goodness, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of and acquaintance with God more than burnt offerings.
Hos. 6:6 Amplified
In this verse, the knowledge of God and a relationship with Him is linked to a life of love. God does not want our sacrifical offerings. He wants our love.
Love is the greatest thing we can give to one another and to God.
It can trump evil, restore peace and promote healing. Nothing can stand against it and yet so few choose to give it.
Love is not a one time gift that we give away and are done with. Love is a way of life. God is love (1 John 4:8) and to live with God means we live with love.
The two commandments that Jesus gave us include love. The first is to love God and the second is to love people. Our example on how to love is seen in the life of Christ.
In Matthew chapter 9, the Pharisees were condemning Jesus for hanging out with sinners. Jesus responds to them with the challenge to learn for themselves what He is doing.
Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy [that is, readiness to help those in trouble] and not sacrifice and sacrificial victims. For I came not to call and invite [to repentence] the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with God), but sinners (the erring ones and all those not free from sin).
Matt. 9:13 Amplified
Out of love Jesus came to set us free from our sin and gives us the opportunity to have a personal relationship with God, our heavenly Father. The result of knowing God is a merciful attitude toward others who are still held captive by sin.
Through mercy, we release God's love into the world around us.
