Persistant Prayer
Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened.
Mat. 7:7-8 Amplified
The Bible teaches us not to be repetitive in our prayers and many people argue that one should pray and ask only once because to do so more than that is a lack of faith. Well, I am not sure.
I know several people who are very sick, injured, or broken and it is weighing heavily on my heart. Over the last several weeks, different ones have come to my mind and I repeatedly keep lifting them up to God. One person in particular was heavy on my heart yesterday. So I kept praying and praying for him and his family. Last night as I was coming home, I began to struggle with this issue of asking more than once.
There are a lot of details that I don't know about this particular situation and I could not think of what else to ask for. So I told God I didn't know what to pray, I asked for His help and then let the Holy Spirit lead me in prayer. Now this morning I read these two verses.
For the record, I believe God hears and answers me everytime I speak to Him. He and I talk every day about all that is going on around me. I do not doubt His ability to understand when I have no words or His ability to intervene when I cannot.
God wants us to come to Him for everything and I believe that when people keep coming up in our thoughts that we are being reminded to pray for them and to reach out to them. Sometimes, I don't even know why a particular person keeps coming up but I pray for them and I check on them only to find out that they are dealing with something.
There is not a rule that limits the number of times we can ask God about something. The issue is not about how many times we ask for somehing but whether we trust that God hears us and that He will take care of the situation.
When we continue to pray for that person who keeps coming to our mind, we open the door of opportunity to be used by God to help them through whatever they are dealing with.
Persistence in prayer includes obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit in order to be the hand of God reaching out to the hurting.
