Forgive Others - Part 2
The Bible warns us of the adverse consequences of holding on to unforgiveness. While it does not harm the person you are holding a grudge against, it will harm you in several ways.
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Luke 6:37 NIV
When we refuse to forgive others, God cannot forgive us. This is an absolute truth of the Bible that cannot be ignored (Matt. 6:14). How we treat others will affect our relationship with God.
The Apostle Paul taught that unforgiveness is an open door for the devil to enter our lives (2 Cor. 2:10-11). When we hold on to bitterness and resentment it is like taking a daily dose of poison that will keep us sick and weak.
Unforgiveness festers in our hearts like an open wound that refuses to heal. It will prevent our growth and it negatively impacts every relationship we have because it destroys our peace. The weight of unforgiveness is oppressive and keeps us going around in circles. It wastes our efforts to move beyond what has hurt us and drains our energy.
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Col. 3:13 NIV
But through Jesus Christ, we can change the negative effects of unforgiveness. We can choose to forgive those who have hurt us. We can choose to live beyond our emotions.
To forgive is a choice. It is an opportunity for us to accomplish something on purpose despite how we may feel about it. The ability to live beyond our feelings comes from the power of the Holy Spirit within us.
Our emotions will tell us that it is too hard to forgive the pain others have caused us but that is not true. Yes, it is hard to forgive sometimes but it cannot be impossible because the Bible would not repeatedly tell us to forgive if it was not within our ability to do so.
At this point I must say that if you have been the victim of abuse, while you must forgive in order to grow past your hurt, you may also need extra help and support. Groups like Celebrate Recovery or professional counselors can help you devolop the skills needed to heal.
If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18 NKJ
Making the decision to forgive is how you do what you can to live peaceably with all people.
Practice today separating your emotions from your choices.
Be willing to forgive all who have caused you pain and rely on Jesus to help your follow through on your choice.
