Story Time
We will not hide them from their children, but we will tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonderful works that He has performed.
Psalm 78:4 Amplified
We all have stories of how God has shown Himself to be real in our lives and how He has taught us and lived in us. But what do we do with those stories? Do we write them in a journal and forget about them? Tell a few people then forget them? I'm thinking based in this verse that we need to be more purposeful in the use our stories.
We can use our stories to remind ourselves about the goodness of God and to encourage ourselves when things are rough. These stories can be great sources of strength and comfort that help keep our faith strong while we press on in rough waters.
Our stories can also be used to help other people out who may be experiencing things similar to what we have been through. They are examples of God's tenderloving care and everlasting faithfulness as we grow in His image.
But most importantly our stories can be used to help our children become healthy adults. Our children are our legacy. They are precious gifts from God and we have been given a huge responsibility and privilege in being able to work with God to raise them.
Sharing our stories of triumphs and mistakes with our children gives them permission to grow free from condemnation when they mess up. Through them they learn they can mess up and still be used in great ways to make an impact in the world. You can explain and demonstrate how to handle life's ups and downs and how to navigate the ebbs and flows of relationships in stories better than lectures for they are the moving pictures of battles won, lessons learned, and the everlasting love of God for each of us.
Stories allow us to explore our relationship with both God and man in ways that pure academics cannot.
Use your stories to help yourself.
Use your stories to help others.
Use your stories to help your children.
Share your stories and your life will leave a lasting impression on your children and the world..
