Closeness
My heart craves and hungers for the presence of God. Now I know that He is always with me but what I desire most are those quiet moments when He and I just sit together. No words are needed when our two hearts communicate.
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, O God.
Psalm 42:1 NLT
This verse has been special to me for many years. It stirs up memories in my heart of times that God and I have shared together and how He has helped me get through some tough things. It is the best way I can describe the longing within me for more of God. God's presence is compelling to me. I cannot get enough of Him and the more I get, the more I want.
When I first started spending quiet time with God it almost seemed awkward and I would wonder if I was "doing it right." I didn't grow up in a Christian home and I had no idea what I was supposed to do so I just sat there and asked God to sit with me. I was surprised that He did and overjoyed as I discovered the brilliance of just being with Him. Then I found a book called, "Practicing the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence. I have read this book many times over the years as I continue to go deeper with God and every time it inspires me to go farther.
Enjoying God's presence is simple. The only cost is time and you can choose whether to do a long period of time once a day or several moments throughout your day. God has no requirements other than you come and hang out with Him.
There is so much life that comes to us when we spend time in the presence of God and focus only on Him. It is more powerful than prayer because God does most of the talking and He doesn't need to use words. You know He is there, you feel Him, you sense Him, and it is all you can do to breathe.
When we set apart time to sit with God and simply be with Him, something gloriously beautiful happens. God opens up all that He is and all that He has to us and gives us the freedom to explore, discover, and search all of His riches. There is an exchange that occurs as we learn more about the nature of the One Who made us. We become more confident in Him, more sure of who we are and what we know. Our strength to overcome in this world grows. We begin to see the truth of God's word all around us and are able to distinguish it from the lies and deceptions of our enemy and society.
God holds nothing back from us - He allows us full access to every aspect of His nature and love for us and to all of His resources. We can have as much of God as we want. He wants us to discover the deep and satisfying intimacy He created us to have with Him but He will not force us. We choose how close we get to God.
Closeness to God comes only from spending time with Him.
