Putting Sin Behind You
One of the first verses I memorized when I started studying the Bible was Psalm 51:10. It talks about keeping our hearts clean before the Lord. This whole Psalm has been my focus for the last week. Repentance is the theme and it's value cannot be measured.
The word "repent" means literally to make a 180 degree turn. It is to recognize the error of our ways and to change the direction in which we were traveling. The Bible tells us that a heart broken with sorrow for our sin is always acceptable to God.

My sacrifice [the sacrifice acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart [broken down with sorrow for sin and humbly and thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise.
Psalm 51:17 Amplified
God will not refuse a heart that regrets sin. Jesus is the only One who can remove every trace of sin from us. The justice of God that requires us to be punished for our sin was met in Jesus Christ. He took our punishment. He paid our debt, in full, not just for the sins we have already committed but all the sins we will ever commit.
Paul warns us in the Book of Romans not to take the mercy of God given to us through Christ for granted. Just because we have been forgiven doesn't mean we can continue in our sin. If we know something is wrong and we do it anyways then we are creating a barrier between us and the promises of God.
In 1 John we are told that one cannot knowingly carry out sin because the presence of God within. He who practices sin is of the devil and does not have God within him (1 John 3:8). Now we all fall short of the glory of God and unintentional sin does not excluded us from God's covering unless we fail to apologize.
And that repentance [with a view to and as the condition of] forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Luke 24:47 Amplified
Repentance is the road to forgiveness. We cannot receive mercy from God without it.
Repentance is the condition required for forgiveness.
Repentance in the name of Jesus allows the mercy of God, through His Blood, to flow in our lives bringing us eternal forgiveness of all our sins. We are washed clean and made white as snow through our sincere regret and apology for our sin. Here, we find the irrevocable forgiveness of God.
Once God forgives, He remember no more.
Repentance is not self condemnation. It is a place of honest regret for choices we have made and an absolute acceptance of the mercy of God. It is totally confident in the fact that we cannot earn our forgiveness, we can only receive it from God through Christ.
The only way to receive forgiveness is through repentance.
