What You Can Hear In The Silence
It has been two weeks to the day since I last sat down to write. Have you noticed?
I occasionally go through periods where I ask God if what I am doing matters to anyone and every time He reminds me of the promise I made when I first started writing this blog almost four years ago. I told Him I would write this blog for Him as long as He would have me to write it even if only one person ever read it.
When I asked God this question again two weeks ago, His reply shocked me. He not only reminded me of my promise but He asked me to sit before Him silently. So I did.
When life gets busy and I feel like I'm spinning my wheels, God will remind me to just stay with Him awhile and say nothing. I sat at His feet and listened and learned.
In the silence I can hear Him so much better.
In the silence, I can ponder His reply.
In the silence, my heart can see what my mind cannot comprehend.
In the silence, I find purpose and meaning and clarity.
In the silence, I find peace, hope, and joy.
It amazes me how much I miss hearing from God when I am busy being busy. My heart longs for more of God's presence every day and even though He is always with me, I am never truly satisfied until I just spend some time simply sitting with Him.
Do you spend time sitting silently with God?
No need to feel guilty if you don't, I just wondered.
I've spent the last week or so reading and re-reading Deuteronomy chapter 11. The main point of this chapter is to put God first. That is the purpose of this blog. God wants to be our greatest love and our first priority.
God wants us to love Him more than anything else.
God's command to love Him above all other things is paired with another command. To obey Him. Jesus said that if we really love God then we would obey His instructions (John 14:15).
Our love for God is demonstrated by our obedience. If we say we love God but refuse to forgive someone, then we really don't love God as much as we say we do. Our words have little power unless they harmonize with our actions (James 2:17).
Having said that, I am about to begin a series of posts on spiritual disciplines. (Please don't stop reading now.)
I don't know what your relationship with God is like and I don't know the road you've walked to get here to this moment. But I ask you to begin praying about the changes God would have you make in your life to help you live a God first life.
I also ask you to follow this blog and to connect with us on Facebook (you can do it here) so that you won't miss out on any of our posts.
Let us know if you have any prayer requests.
